In all its complexity, organizational behaviour as a field cannot be defined in simplistic terms. As complex as human behaviour and its interrelated fields, organizational behaviour covers so many aspects of an organizations life, that simple definitions can be misleading. However let us attempt to analyze what it means, and what is the purpose behind its study.

Basically it is the study of how people, both individually and in groups, behave in any organization. The academic study of this field is also termed as organizational psychology. When business schools teach it as part of their management or business courses then it is termed as organizational behaviour studies. The relationships between people and organizations are studied in terms of groups, the organization as a whole, and one to one relationships. It is the study of the dynamics of human behaviour in a controlled organizational environment. It teaches you how to describe, understand and interpret these behavioural patterns, and also how to use these interpretations to motivate the members of the organization. This leads us to the purpose behind studying organizational behaviour. There are many excellent reasons behind studying this field, and we are elucidating some of them below:

 

Organizational behaviour and human performances: The interrelationship between performance and the behaviour of the employees can never be overemphasized. Understanding how to get a better performance from the employees is one of the end results of the implementation of OB theories.

Problem Solving: Most managers will term human behaviour and reactions and actions as their major problems. These could range from poor performance, to lack of motivation, and lack of leadership among others. A study of good management techniques will always involve the study of OB as one of its many facets.

Dealing with organizational Change: If changes are implemented in any organization, without taking into consideration the organizational behaviour theories and studies, then the change may not be very effective, Often we fail to take into account the psychological and personal consequences of any organizational change. It is mainly the study of OB that helps us understand and evaluate these consequences.

Understanding actions and reactions: OB studies have developed many theories of how people act and react in a certain manner. For managers and also for colleagues in a workplace it is important to be able to anticipate actions, and to be able to deal with reactions in most situations. A better understanding also leads to a better evaluation of how to tackle any potential situations.
