Organizational behaviour is a field that covers so many aspects of an organization’s life, that some how we begin to feel that knowledge about its implications can be of utmost importance. Managing change in any organization without taking into consideration the basics of organizational behaviour can lead to change without improvement. Since this field covers aspects such as communication, group behaviour, sociology and psychology among other things, it can provide some basic guidelines before any change is put into place.

Basically organizational behaviour studies draw their conclusions from many areas of research. Psychology – as in group psychology and individual psycho analysis has provided an insight into the workings of the human mind. Analysis of behaviour and the understanding of it, helps in developing more effective relationships between groups and between managers and their teams. Managers can achieve far greater success if they begin to effectively monitor the work and the behaviour patterns of their employees.

 

Sociology studies have proven that effective managements is dependent on studying the social and cultural environments of not only the members of the organizations but also of the organization itself. The interplay between the environment that the organization espouses and the environment from which its members derive their personalities, must be studied and understood. In this same context, research is now being centered on cross-cultural management, family issues and issues involving the work of women. The changing nature of work environments worldwide has become another sector where a lot of research is being done.

Anthropology is also a part of the basics of organizational behaviour studies. This is a relatively new phenomenon, since anthropology theories have only recently been incorporated into day to day psychology. It is basically the study of humanity, both past and present. Its study has also been termed as the “study of similarities and differences in the world’s people”. In lieu of the above paragraph where we have spoken about the importance of sociology in organizational behaviour studies, the inclusion of anthropology into the basics of organizational behaviour becomes relevant.

Among other basics of organizational behaviour are fields such as leadership theories, motivational techniques, political science (to study the implications of governance systems on organizational behaviour) skill management. Organizational behaviour in its complexity mirrors the complexity of human behaviour. Hence study and implementation of organizational behaviour theories assumes greater importance as the organization grows larger and more complex.
